Hi! I’m Alex,
I’m a self-taught character designer, illustrator, comic artist, and content creator. Inspired early on by my love for 2D animation and manga, I built my career step by step and have worked with studios and publishers like Paramount, Dark Horse Comics, and Magpie Games.
The easiest way I learned was through observation. I studied artists I loved, I watched videos of artists drawing. I tried to replicate what they did. Through demos and dissecting examples, I want to help you improve your skills of observation and share how I simplify shapes, and explore styles.
I started out painting portraits of people and their pets, then moved into comics, first indie projects, and eventually worked with Dark Horse Comics. Some of my work includes: The Legend of Korra: Patterns in Time, Avatar Legends: The Roleplaying Game, Legend of Korra: Mystery of Penquan Island, Critical Role – Vox Machina Origins III #4, and various indie comic covers.

After a brief introduction to the course tools, we explore the vital difference between generic character design and capturing a specific identity. You will learn to recognize exactly when likeness matters and how to use it.
MODULE 3 & 4
Master the art of observation by learning how to select and combine high-quality references without letting them restrict your creativity. You will explore how to break down facial features and bodies into basic shape language, using these forms to define a character's personality while maintaining consistent shading and structure.
MODULE 5 & 6
Learn to push past realism by stretching likeness into its simplest style, from lifelike renders to minimalist cartoons. You will discover the 'breaking point' where style overtakes identity and master how to maintain a subject's likeness.
MODULE 7
In the final module, we bridge the gap between practice and professional application. We discuss how to leverage your new mastery of likeness in the industry whether you're pursuing a career as a professional artist or elevating your personal hobby projects to ensure your work stands out in the creative market.
